A 13-year-old Malaysian girl, who received a liver transplant in Shanghai 11 years ago, returned to Renji Hospital to express her gratitude to the medical team for saving her life.

The girl suffered from liver cirrhosis due to biliary atresia and was in critical condition. Her family failed to find a hospital capable of treating her in Malaysia and came all the way to Renji Hospital for a live liver transplant surgery, which cured the girl.

She was the first international patient to undergo live liver transplantation at Renji.

After the case was widely reported by media in Malaysia, many families with children suffering from terminal liver disease came to Shanghai for treatment.

So far, Renji Hospital has offered liver transplant surgery to over 60 expat children from countries like Malaysia, the Philippines and Mongolia.

The girl and several other cured Malaysian children got together at Renji on Thursday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the hospital's international medical department.

Renji Hospital is the nation's largest liver transplantation center, and has become the No. 1 pediatric liver transplantation center in the world. For the past 12 years, it has been ranked as the world's leading facility for pediatric surgery.

It has performed over 8,000 liver transplantations, including over 4,000 on children. The 10-year survival rate for pediatric cases is over 90 percent, placing it among the top centers globally.

In addition to receiving overseas patients, Renji has also carried out training for international doctors.

In 2019, it initiated an international children's live liver transplant skills training project by reaching an agreement with Malaysia's University of Malaya Medical Center.

So far, Renji has trained 16 medical professionals in Malaysia and jointly carried out Malaysia's first children's live liver transplant surgery to promote China's high-end medical capability abroad.

During Thursday's event, Renji Hospital signed a memorandum of understanding with the charity organization Nadi Permata Malaysia to help more needy children in the Southeast Asian country.

The hospital also announced the launch of the English version of its online service and an international cloud clinic to boost the standardization and globalization of its medical service.
