A Personal Guide to Shanghai's Vibrant District
The neighborhood of Danish businesswoman and fitness professional Siri Nordhejm reflects her principles of fitness, mindfulness and community. Siri co-founded MYbarre, a luxury workout franchise that operates studios in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing, to inspire individuals to enhance their physical and mental well-being. In Jing'an, one of Shanghai's most dynamic and diverse districts, she enjoys a lifestyle where history meets energy – golden temple roofs glinting against glass towers, leafy streets lined with cafés, boutiques and parks, and a vibrant mix of flavors, cultures and experiences all within walking distance.
Q: Could you introduce the neighborhood you live in?
I live in Jing'an, one of Shanghai's most vibrant and cosmopolitan districts. It's a lively blend of sleek skyscrapers, historic architecture and tree-lined streets that change beautifully with the seasons. The area is full of cozy cafés, stylish boutiques and some of the city's best restaurants, making it a hub for both locals and expats. I love how Jing'an offers the perfect balance – there's the buzz and convenience of city life, yet still pockets of calm where you can enjoy a quiet coffee or a walk among heritage buildings and leafy parks.
Q: What's the best thing about living in this neighborhood?
The best part of Jing'an is its diversity and convenience. Within just a short walk, you can find everything from world-class dining and trendy cafés to boutique shops and serene parks. I love that on any given day, I can start with a quiet coffee at a cafe, fit in a workout, explore a new restaurant and end the evening at a cozy wine bar – all without leaving the neighborhood. It's a place where every corner feels full of possibility and inspiration.
Q: What attraction here should not be missed?
The Jing'an Temple is an absolute must-see – a breathtaking piece of history and culture set right in the heart of Shanghai's modern skyline. Its golden roofs and intricate details are even more captivating when the sunlight hits them. After exploring the temple, you're surrounded by some of the neighborhood's best cafés and restaurants, making it easy to turn your visit into a perfect day out.
Q: Each person may have different tastes, but they all want a great cafe. What's your favorite cafe near your place?
One of my favorites is O'mills Sourdough Bakery & Bistro (Rm 105, 135 Yanping Rd 延平路135号105室). It's warm and inviting, with freshly-baked bread and pastries filling the air with the most amazing aroma. Their coffee is excellent, and the menu offers wholesome, flavorful options. Whether I'm meeting a friend for brunch or enjoying a quiet solo breakfast, it's the kind of place that makes you want to linger.
I also love RAGU (176 Jiaozhou Rd 胶州路176号) for its relaxed vibe, great wine selection and delicious Italian dishes – perfect for a casual lunch or a cozy dinner.
Q: Where should someone eat around here?
For an unforgettable dinner, try Sage Gastro (1407 Nansuzhou Rd 南苏州路1047号). They serve delicious contemporary dishes with a creative twist, all in a stylish yet welcoming setting. The menu changes with the seasons, so there's always something new to discover, and the flavors are always fresh and beautifully balanced – perfect for a special night out with friends.
For something sweet, Sloppy Gin (Rm 104, 425 Yanping Rd 延平路425号1楼104室) is a must-visit bakery with incredible pastries, ideal for a morning treat or an afternoon pick-me-up.
Q: From high fashion to emerging designers, from flowers to fresh produce, where do you shop in your neighborhood?
For fashion, I love exploring Réel Mall (1601 Nanjing Rd W. 南京西路1601号) for luxury brands and statement pieces and stopping by Xinlelu's (414 Shaanxi Rd N. 陕西北路414号) Jing'an location for unique finds from emerging designers. For fresh produce and flowers, the neighborhood's local wet markets are unbeatable – full of seasonal fruits, vegetables and beautiful blooms that bring a touch of nature into city living.
Q: Is there a neighborhood place you recommend for a night out or simply a drink after work?
Sakabar Malabar (1081 Wuding Rd 武定路1081号) is one of my favorites for unwinding in Jing'an. It has a warm, intimate atmosphere and an impressive selection of sake and cocktails. Whether you're meeting friends for a lively evening or just enjoying a quiet drink after work, it's the kind of place that feels both special and relaxed.
Q: Have you made any new discoveries in your neighborhood lately?
Lately, I've been spending a lot of time walking along the Suzhou Creek with my dog. It's peaceful, with beautiful water views and greenery that feel worlds away from the city noise. I've also recently started playing padel and was excited to discover there are two great courts right here in Jing'an.
