Navigating Shanghai's Creative Pulse from a Quiet Riverside Neighborhood
Business professional Kseniia Dorodnova works at the crossroads of global supply chains, technology, and cross-cultural communication in Shanghai. The Russian native makes complexity work across marketplaces, but her curiosity doesn't stop at work. She mixes her demanding work with sports, learning and a passion for the arts. Early last year, she held a photography exhibition in Shanghai. Kseniia is on the board of an international women's community and is always looking for exciting events to join. She's drawn to environments that are fast-moving, diverse and mentally stimulating.
Could you introduce the neighborhood you live in?
I live in Putuo District, next to the Tian An1000 Trees complex. It's a quiet area but very convenient logistically – with easy transport, minimal traffic and quick access to different parts of the city. Suzhou Creek runs nearby, which makes for perfect morning runs or peaceful riverside walks when I need some calm time.
What's the best thing about living in this neighborhood?
It's a pleasant, quiet and green area with a lot of charm. The highlight for me is the M50 art hub (50 Moganshan Rd 莫干山路50号) – a former industrial zone transformed into a vibrant hub of contemporary art and creativity. Full of color, energy and a countless number of works presented in different galleries in narrow alleyways, it helps you encounter a mix of small galleries, artist studios and boutique art shops, each with its own personality. Since I'm interested in art, it's a must-visit for me whenever I feel thirsty for a new experience for my soul, need inspiration for my brain, or just want my eyes to see something new and nurturing.
What attractions here should not be missed?
While exploring with friends, I found a charming tea house, Qushui Space (Rm 101, Bldg 13, 50 Moganshan Rd 莫干山路50号13号楼101室), where tea is served on small floating boats that gently drift around the café. You sit on low wooden logs surrounded by calligraphy paper, which you can use to practice writing characters. The cozy, artistic atmosphere feels like a scene from a cartoon, complete with soft traditional music. Nearby is Island6 Gallery (2/F, Bldg 6, 50 Moganshan Rd 莫干山路50号6号楼2楼), a contemporary art space where multi-media brings photos to life, turning each piece into a small adventure for the imagination.
What is your favorite cafe near home?
I usually grab a matcha at Manner's before heading out for a walk. I haven't found my ultimate favorite café here yet, but Manner's is a reliable choice.
Where should someone eat around here?
The Tian An 1000 Trees complex offers plenty of good restaurants, many with open terraces surrounded by beautiful trees, creating a cozy atmosphere. I've also heard a top Japanese restaurant is opening soon – I'm definitely planning to check it out.
From high fashion to emerging designers, from flowers to fresh produce, where do you shop in your neighborhood?
For quick errands, I go to the ground floor of the Tian An 1000 Trees shopping center. For designer items, there are some extravagant interior design and accessory stores on the first floor worth exploring. It's not really a spot for everyday or weekly shopping, though.
Is there a neighborhood place you recommend for a night out or simply a drink after work?
MOM (Unit A, Bldg 1, 50 Moganshan Rd 莫干山路50号一号楼一层A) is a great option for a cozy after-work catch-up with friends, especially when popular spots start to feel a bit predictable.
Have you made any new discoveries in your neighborhood lately?
Yes! I recently discovered the Shanghai Mint Museum (15 Guangfu Rd W. 光复西路15号) near the riverside. It's an industrial museum focused on coin minting and engraving, with highlights that were showcased in a London exhibition. It provides a fascinating glimpse into Chinese culture and creativity over the past two centuries.
