Shanghai's Metro Line 2 officially extended westward on Saturday with the launch of its new western terminus – Panxiang Road · Shanghai National Accounting Institute Station, connecting suburban Qingpu District's West Hongqiao area directly to downtown.

Long hailed as Shanghai's vital east-west artery, Line 2 links Hongqiao and Pudong international airports while traversing key commercial and cultural districts. It's also the only Metro line offering direct access from Qingpu to the city center.

West Hongqiao, a key component of the Hongqiao International Central Business District, stands to benefit significantly from improved connectivity. The terminus is expected to ease daily commutes and fuel residential and commercial growth in the emerging business cluster.

"The extension shaves off 10 to 15 minutes from my commute," said a man visiting the new station with his child on the opening day. "We used to rely on e-bikes or buses to reach the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) Station to take Metro Line 2. Now we can just walk here for a ride to downtown."

For frequent commuters like office workers, the change is transformative.

"I used to transfer from Line 17 to Line 2 at NECC. This direct service means no more tiring transfers," said one commuter.

Boasting four exits and three barrier-free elevators, the station prioritizes accessibility with an accessible restroom on the platform and shared bike or scooter parking bays at each entrance.

Its innovative open-gate ticket validation allows passengers to tap cards and pass through seamlessly, eliminating queue waits.

Operational hours run from approximately 5:30am to 10:50pm, with peak-hour headways of 3 to 5 minutes to accommodate high demand.

CIIE preparations

The opening aligns with final preparations for the China International Import Expo, which runs from November 5 to 10 at the nearby NECC.

"The new station will balance passenger flows with Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 Station during peak periods," explained Sun Ruiyi, the station's duty manager.

"If NECC Station becomes overcrowded, some trains will bypass it and head directly here. Our staff will guide passengers to wait for the next train, transfer, or take a short bus ride to the venue."
