Hong Kong's HK$93M Gold Heist: 5 Arrested in Daylight Raid
Five suspects have been arrested and 73 gold bars worth approximately HK$93 million (US$11.9 million) recovered following a brazen daylight robbery at a gold dealership in Hung Hom in Hong Kong, police announced at a press briefing on March 21.
The incident took place around 2pm on March 20 at a gold trading shop in Peninsula Square on Sung On Street, according to Senior Inspector of the Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon West.
Police said a male buyer was conducting a gold transaction with a female staff member when two men and one woman entered the premises. The trio claimed that the shop's proprietor was deeply in debt and that they were there to seize the gold bars. The suspects then proceeded to load all 73 one-kilogram gold bars into a suitcase, with the male buyer joining them in the act.
Although the female staff member attempted to intervene, she was unable to stop the group. The four individuals fled the shop and escaped in two private cars with a male lookout who had been waiting outside.
Responding to a report filed shortly after the incident, officers reviewed extensive closed-circuit television footage and quickly identified the five suspects. They were arrested later that evening in Central and Tai Po, where all the stolen gold bars were recovered.
At a press conference on March 21, police confirmed that the five individuals remain in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
