A first-aid skills competition was held in Shanghai on Friday in anticipation of World First Aid Day, which falls next Saturday.

Some 100 volunteers, residents, students and medial staff participated in the event, organized by the Red Cross Society of China Shanghai Branch.

Participants demonstrated their skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of automated external defibrillators and trauma first-aid.

The local Red Cross branch also intends to launch a program to promote first-aid knowledge within the public. The program will include offering training for volunteers of the upcoming China International Import Expo, as well as broadcasting first-aid awareness videos in Metro stations.

Red Cross officials say public knowledge of first aid has been rising in recent years. The organization offered training to some 617,000 people in 2018.
