Shanghai's New Year's Eve Dinners in High Demand, From Old Brands to Rural Tables

As the Spring Festival approaches, New Year's Eve dinner bookings in Shanghai are booming. From iconic city restaurants to countryside eateries, tables filled with reunion flavors are in high demand across the city.

For many locals, long-standing favorites like Xing Hua Lou and Xinya Cantonese Restaurant remain the ultimate symbols of the festive season, with New Year's Eve slots often fully booked months in advance.

Reservations from the first to the seventh day across the Chinese New Year holiday are nearly sold out, as many families choose to host large reunions during the holiday period, while keeping New Year's Eve for smaller family gatherings.

To meet demand from those who were unable to secure a reservation, both restaurants have launched ready-to-cook feast sets, including shareable hotpot meals, festive gift boxes with auspicious meanings, and traditional pastries symbolizing good fortune.

Beyond classic Shanghainese cuisine, a new wave of dining options has risen in popularity, with restaurants serving Ningbo, Xinjiang, and modern Beijing flavors emerging as fresh choices for family reunion dinners.

While downtown orders are booming, rural dining spots are also seeing their busiest season of the year. Countryside restaurants, known for slow-cooked dishes over wood fires, are drawing city diners with comforting, nostalgic flavors.

The Spring Festival falls on February 17, and the holiday lasts for nine days this year.
