Yiwu's Mistake‑Made 'Crying Horse' Plushie Becomes Internet Hit
A plush toy horse designed to celebrate the upcoming Lunar Year of the Horse has galloped to viral fame — not for its cheerful grin, but because a factory sewing error gave it a comically forlorn, "crying" expression.
The unexpected star is a 20‑centimeter‑tall stuffed horse originally meant to wear an upturned smile. Instead, a worker at a factory in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, accidentally stitched the mouth upside down, resulting in a distinct downturned pout. With its blush and nostrils also pointing downward, the toy now sports what Chinese netizens have affectionately called a "wronged look."
Its rise from defect to darling began when a customer in Hangzhou posted photos online of the "flawed" purchase, joking that the "smiling horse" had turned into a "crying horse." Rather than drawing criticism, the post sparked a wave of affection across social media.
Commenters flooded platforms, hailing the "crying horse" as a "hidden edition," calling it "utterly adorable" and saying its expression "looks just like me at work."
The online buzz quickly turned into surging demand. Many users contacted sellers to seek out the "imperfect" version. "We never expected it to go viral because of a customer's post," a merchant told Guangming Daily, adding that production had been ramped up to meet orders and that the price would remain at 25 yuan (US$3.58).
"The worker simply sewed the mouth upside down," said Zhang, a vendor at the Yiwu International Trade City, in a January 9 interview with Jimu News. From factory reject to hot commodity, she described overwhelming demand: "We've had to open more than 10 production lines. There's no other way — we just can't keep up."
