Sleep pods are being built for the convenience of passengers at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport is installing sleep pods in terminals 1 and 2, along with shower facilities.
The pods will be near international departure Gate 24 in Terminal 1 and Gate 67 in Terminal 2. Each location will provide 10 to 20 sleep pods, with an estimated charge of 65 yuan (US$9.02) per hour or 333 yuan per night. Passengers can use the pods to rest, work or go online.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of June, according to Shanghai Observer.
Five locations with a total of 11 shower rooms will be built in the international transfer and arrival areas of both terminals. The airport will offer free showers and facilities such as hair dryers, with the project also expected to be completed in June.
Many passengers, especially those on early morning flights or late-night transfers, choose to spend the night at the airport. To address this, Shanghai airport offers a range of services, including free rest areas and nighttime dining.
Rest areas are available near several boarding gates in Terminal 2, such as domestic C92 gate on the south side, the domestic H105 gate at S1, and the international departure G148 gate at S2. These areas are equipped with sofas, recliners and charging facilities, and are open to departing and transferring passengers free of charge.
The airport has also achieved full Wi-Fi coverage inside the terminals. To address online access problems faced by foreign passengers, a passport photo recognition method for Internet authentication has been introduced, making it easier for those who have just arrived in China and have not yet obtained a SIM card to go online.
To meet the needs of passengers on the earliest and latest flights, Pudong airport has coordinated with 45 stores to extend their operating hours. Currently, 127 stores are open from 10pm to early morning, accounting for about 40 percent of all commercial outlets, ensuring that nighttime dining and retail options are available.
There are currently 13 24-hour convenience stores in the terminals offering food, drinks and daily necessities. In addition, 28 stores offer items such as disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products and masks. The terminals also have 56 self-service vending machines.
