Serbian native Danica Markovic is brand manager for Pedders Gin.

Danica Markovic, from Serbian capital Belgrade, has been in Shanghai since 2015. What attracted her back then continues to captivate her today: the city's ever-changing, infinitely diversified dynamism. As a brand manager for Peddlers Gin, a local craft gin brand, she's discovered the ideal match for her passion for exploring Shanghai and her neighborhood's vibrant bar and restaurant scene, where creativity and culture intersect on every corner.

What's the best thing about living in this neighborhood?

Living at the intersection of Dingxi Road and Panyu Road, I enjoy the perfect balance it provides. It's vibrant yet calm, lively but never overwhelming. There's this beautiful blend of local Chinese culture and Western influences, giving me endless options when it comes to food, coffee, and nightlife. One moment I'm slurping noodles at a humble local eatery, and the next, I'm sipping a craft cocktail or wine at a chic bar. It's close enough to the city center to feel connected but just far enough to keep things peaceful. And to top it all off, my favorite nail salon — Perfect Nails (200 Fahuazhen Rd 法华镇路200号) — is right on Fahuazhen Road. Honestly, that alone makes it hard to leave this area!

Danica lives at the intersection of Dingxi Road and Panyu Road and finds the locality energetic but not overbearing.

What's your favorite cafe?

I actually have two favorites and can never quite decide between them — it depends on my mood!

Trifle (Bldg 16, Phase 2, Columbia Circle, 1262 Yan'an Rd W. 上生新所2期16号楼), tucked inside Columbia Circle, is my go-to for a cozy brunch and great coffee. The vibe is relaxed and inviting, with oversized pillows scattered everywhere — perfect for working, reading, or just lounging the day away. There's also an adorable dog that's always around (pretty sure it belongs to the cafe), which just adds to the homey charm.

The space also has a small flower shop where you can enjoy your latte while witnessing the arrangement of fresh bouquets. Their pastries are consistently excellent, and the brunch menu strikes a great balance between comforting classics and inventive local twists. I'm a simple coffee person, so I usually go for a latte or flat white, always served in the cutest white retro cups. And if you go, please don't miss the tofu cheesecake. It's unforgettable.

Trifle is Danica's go-to for a cozy brunch.

Then there's Bake No Title (232 Panyu Rd 番禺路232号), another favorite of mine and home to some of the best pastries in town. It blends French patisserie elegance with a modern local edge. The design is sleek and minimalist, featuring an open kitchen where you can see the chefs at work. My must-orders: the French toast, any of the croissants, and the banana cinnamon roll. Whether it's a flat white, latte, or a simple Americano, their coffee is consistently excellent. By night, the cafe transforms into a bistro, with rotating menus from some of Shanghai's most exciting culinary talents. It's such a clever, flexible use of space.

Danica prefers Lotus Eatery when she craves for local flavors.

Where do you eat around here?

Lotus Eatery (1112 Dingxi Rd 定西路1112号) is always top of my list when I'm craving bold local flavors. It's a fantastic Yunnan spot with delicious dishes and very reasonable prices. Beloved by expats and locals alike — for good reason. My go-tos include the pan-fried goat cheese, spicy black chicken salad, minced beef, crispy kidney beans, whole fish, and the Yunnan mushrooms. It's vibrant, casual, and consistently satisfying.

Another gem is Wu Guan Tang Vegetarian (349 Xinhua Rd 新华路349号) on Xinhua Road — my favorite street in Shanghai. This little spot, tucked inside a charming old lane house with a rooftop patio, serves vegetarian dishes that are full of flavor. I'm obsessed with the vinegar pepper cold noodles and the eggplant strips with sesame paste. The combination of creamy, nutty, and tangy flavors is simply irresistible.

Where do you shop in your neighborhood?

Honestly I'm terrible at this. I mostly stick to Zara or scroll Taobao.

The rooftop at Naif is perfect for a drink.

The pool view from Naif's rooftop is relaxing and breezy.

Any neighborhood place you prefer for a night out or simply a drink after work?

I love Naif (201, 2/F, Columbia Circle swimming pool 上生新所泳池二层201) in Columbia Circle. It's the perfect spot for a glass of wine or a gin and tonic, especially on the rooftop. The view over the pool gives it a relaxed, breezy vibe — ideal for unwinding after a long day.

And if you're into wine, definitely check out Blac+ Blac (F106, No. 55, Lane 222 Panyu Rd 番禺路222弄55号F106) wine bar. It's right on the edge of Columbia Circle and has an awesome wine selection, including self-serving machines so you can pour your glass. They also offer an amazing 3-hour free-flow deal for just 99 RMB.

Danica is surprised by Columbia Circle Phase 2's eclectic mix of stores, cafes, and eateries.

Have you made any new discovery in your neighborhood recently?

Yes — the Columbia Circle Phase 2 itself! It's got a cool mix of shops, cafes, and restaurants. It's never crowded, unlike other spots in the city. I love strolling through the tree-lined streets. There's always something new to explore — whether it's a boutique, a hidden cafe, or a fresh place to eat.
