Changning engages expats in legal salon

Shanghai's Changning district launched its first-ever legal salon for expats on Sept 12 in a bid to improve legal services for the district's international community.

The event brought together expats from diverse backgrounds to discuss legal challenges they encountered in daily life and gather feedback.

Participants talked about issues such as cultural misunderstandings, language barriers, and limited access to legal resources.

Ignatiev Alexei, a Russian content creator, raised concerns about the visa renewal process, calling for a centralized online platform to streamline documentation requirements.

He also noted confusion regarding local traffic regulations, particularly concerning e-bikes.

"As a social media blogger, I would create more educational videos from now on for expats living in China on traffic rules," he said.

Nkou-Douniama Rud Aurcel, an international law student, noted Shanghai's modernness compared to other Chinese cities but stressed the importance of clear legal frameworks for expats.

"Respecting local laws is crucial," he said, adding that events like the salon help bridge cultural gaps and foster mutual understanding, and he will help raise the legal awareness among the expat community.

Changning authorities pledged to act on the feedback, according to Shen Xiaodong, an official from the district justice bureau.

Key initiatives would include offering more multilingual resources, digital solutions and community outreach, including dialogues and collaborations with social media influencers.
