As part of the 24th China Shanghai International Arts Festival, The Threepenny Opera from Germany will be staged at West Bund Theatre on Nov 7, marking its Asian premiere.

The production stands among Bertolt Brecht's most frequently performed works worldwide. It is presented by the historic Berliner Ensemble, founded by Brecht himself, and directed by Barrie Kosky, a two-time recipient of the International Opera Awards for "Director of the Year".

The story follows the gangster Macheath as he navigates the criminal underworld and the hypocrisy of high society. In this setting, even the most intimate relationships are reduced to transactions: marriage becomes a contract of resources, affection a token of exchange, and a sex worker's betrayal as a matter of payout. Friendships turn into strategic games, and family ties are shaped by power and consumption.

The stage design has drawn wide acclaim, featuring a maze-like structure of cold metal and geometric frames that forms both the skeleton of this absurd world and a reflection of society's illusion of order.

Musically, the piece blends popular tunes, jazz, and other accessible genres, creating a complex yet engaging experience that bridges high art and popular expression.
