The Huangpu district intangible cultural heritage exhibition hall is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to the art of Qingtian stone carving, open to the public until Oct 9.

This exhibition showcases the traditional craft from Qingtian county in southern Zhejiang province, renowned for its distinctive colorful patterns and smooth texture. Over time, Qingtian stone carving has gained recognition as a notable art form from the East.

A key aspect of this craft is the principle of creating based on the material, a technique preserved through generations. Artisans skillfully shape each piece to follow the natural form of the stone, using its inherent colors to enhance the final creation.

Visitors can explore over 100 works from local cultural heritage project inheritors, including Dai Chunping and Ye Daiwei, as well as acclaimed stone carving artists and crafts masters like Xu Genmin and Chen Yanqing.

The collection features pieces carved from rare and valuable materials, with striking blue-and-white contrasts and star-like sparkles, jade-like smoothness paired with vibrant green tones, and golden-yellow hues reminiscent of pure gold. Under the skilled hands of master artisans, these Qingtian stone carvings are transformed into dynamic landscapes and vivid depictions of living creatures.
