Our furry friends can now travel far on high-speed trains

In response to the growing demand for pet-friendly travel, China Railway has expanded its pet transport pilot program, which was launched in April, to include 25 train stations and 38 high-speed train routes, effective today (June 20).

These new routes enable more passengers to travel on the same train with their pet cats and dogs, provided they weigh under 15kg and stand no taller than 40cm at the shoulder. This initiative is designed for weekend getaways, long-distance trips and family visits.

Expanded coverage and stations

The latest expansion of China's high-speed rail pet travel service now includes 20 additional stations across the country. These new hubs connect key regions and cities, making it easier for travelers to journey with their pets.

The stations now offering this service include Beijing West, Zhengzhou East, Wuhan, Changsha South, Guangzhou South and Shenzhen North. Additionally, Xi'an North, Chengdu East and Qingdao are accessible to passengers from western and central regions, while Shenyang North, Dalian North and Harbin West serve those in the northeast.

This program encompasses specific designated high-speed rail routes. These routes include trains G335, G1377, G491/492, G935, G1591 and G208, providing travelers with more options for scheduling trips with their pets.

How it works

The traveler can bring one healthy, under-15kg domesticated cat or dog and no taller than 40cm at the shoulder on each trip. Under supervision, pets travel on the same train in climate-controlled circumstances.

Reservations can be made on the railway's 12306 mobile app's "Pet Transport" feature. On the day of travel, customers must bring a valid ID, an animal quarantine certificate and their pet to the China Railway Express desk to check in.

Safer summer travel for pets

To keep pets cool during the summer, China Railway is enhancing sanitation and temperature regulation in pet compartments. Improved monitoring will ensure a safe and stress-free journey for every pet on board.

The pet transport initiative has garnered significant public support since the introduction of similar services on the Beijing-Shanghai line in April. With the program now expanded to eight high-speed rail lines, China Railway is committed to making future improvements and encourages passenger feedback to further optimize the service.

Pet owners can reach out to 12306 or 95572, or use the 12306 app for more information.
