Shopper Wins a Gold Bar in a Shanghai Holiday Lottery
A Shanghai consumer won the Nanjing Road's gold bar lottery after purchasing bedding at the New World City shopping mall.
The winner, surnamed Wang, reported spending four to five times his usual shopping budget, amounting to around 40,000 yuan (US$5,614). He got multiple lottery codes from his purchases.
"I was skeptical when I received the message in the morning. I felt certain only after the organizer called to confirm it. This is the biggest prize I've ever won," Wang said after collecting the gold bar.
The bar weighs 50 grams and is worth about 50,000 yuan. It was created as a limited-edition memento for the 26th anniversary of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall.
The lottery will continue through October 8, with 14 gold bars in total to be awarded, along with shopping and dining vouchers.
Customers spending at least 126 yuan at designated shops can join by uploading receipts to a WeChat mini program "Golden Encounter on Nanjing Road (金喜相逢南京路)."
New World City said the event has boosted both traffic and sales. The mall reported a 30 percent increase in visitors over the weekend and double sales compared with the same period last year, said deputy general manager Li Wei.
How to take part in the lottery:
- Spend at least 126 yuan on one purchase at a participating store on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall.
- Keep the paper receipt or ask for an electronic one.
- Use the WeChat app to find the mini program called "金喜相逢南京路."
- Upload the receipt and complete identity verification.
