New Year Babies Delivered in Local Hospitals
Many couples received the best possible New Year's gift on the first day of 2026–their newborn babies.
At midnight, a baby boy was delivered at the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital's Fengxian branch, becoming the city's first New Year baby.
His parents shared that they had hoped for a January 1 delivery, and their wish came true exactly as planned. They named the boy "Cancan," wishing him a vibrant and brilliant life, filled with the vitality of the rising sun.
Just one minute later, at 00:01, a baby girl was born at the hospital's Xuhui branch.
Her family works in the medical and education fields. The parents described the delivery as very smooth and expressed their heartfelt thanks to the medical staff.
A total of nine babies had been delivered by 8am at the hospital's two branches.
At Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, experienced medical professionals remained on duty throughout the New Year holiday.
Midwife Huang Haiyan, with 22 years of experience, welcomed the hospital's first baby of 2026 at 00:01
She has assisted in the delivery of more than 5,000 babies and said she still feels excitement and joy each time she helps bring a new life into the world.
"Working on New Year's Eve is especially meaningful. A newborn represents new hope and a new beginning–just like the New Year itself," Huang reflected.
Meanwhile, Fudan University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital welcomed five New Year babies by 8 am on January 1.
The hospital's first arrival entered the world at 00:24.
"The whole delivery process was much smoother and more comfortable than I had expected," said the new mother, who received a comprehensive evaluation and a personalized delivery plan shortly after being admitted.
"Seeing the happy faces of new parents is the best New Year's gift for us," said midwife Ji Xinyi, who was working her third New Year shift.
