Prize of the Week
The Jinshan District Administration of Culture and Tourism will give this week's winners a Chinese-inspired cultural creative product set.
There will be five winners.
A Yupian (《玉篇》)-inspired canvas tote bag and traditional Chinese folding fan are included in the set. A side of the fan displays "City News Service," while the other side displays "Gu Yewang" (顾野王).
Tinglin Town, in Jinshan District, is a tranquil Jiangnan water town, distinct from the bustling city life. With winding streams, bridges, and old-fashioned lanes, it is also rich in cultural heritage. It was here that the historical figure Gu Yewang was born.
Gu Yewang was a renowned official, philologist, geographer, historian, and painter during the Liang and Chen dynasties of the Southern Dynasties (AD 420-589) period.
Born into a prestigious family, he was known as the "Confucius of Jiangdong." By the age of 7, he had mastered the Five Classics, and by 9, he was already writing essays – his talent was widely recognized at an early age.
Admiring the Eastern Han scholar Feng Yewang (冯野王), he adopted the name "Yewang (野王)" himself, dedicating his life to scholarship and later living in seclusion in Tinglin Town.
One of his most important works is "Yupian," the earliest Chinese dictionary written in regular script. Following the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (《说文解字》), it stands as another milestone in Chinese lexicography and has had an important influence on the cultural connections of the East Asian region.
