At 72, China's Oldest Natural Mother Lies Bedridden as Young Daughter Tries to Care for Her

On Mother's Day this year, a 6-year-old girl stood at her mother's bedside in the southern Chinese city of Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, lifting a cup of milk to the older woman's lips.

The mother, Tian Xinju, 72, lay with her head shaved and her face drained of color. Beside her sat her husband, Huang Weiping, 75, visibly aged, his face darkened and deeply lined. The scene, shared on the family's social media account on May 10, drew an outpouring of concern from followers who have tracked the family's unusual story for more than six years.

The girl is Huang Tianci — meaning "Heaven's Gift" — born in October 2019 to parents old enough to be her great-grandparents. Her mother was 67 at the time, her father 68. It was a birth that made national headlines and turned the couple into one of China's most polarizing Internet families: celebrated by some as proof of parental devotion, condemned by others as an act of recklessness whose costs would fall on the child.

The Mother's Day footage suggests those costs are coming due.

'Heaven's gift'

Tian, a retired staff worker at the Zaozhuang Maternal and Child Health Hospital in the eastern province of Shandong, said she had resumed menstruation in 2018 after taking blood-thinning medication for a minor stroke. When she visited the hospital in January 2019, doctors told her she was already pregnant. The hospital classified the pregnancy as "red-level high risk" and recommended termination, The Paper reported.

The couple's two adult children — whose own children were already teenagers — opposed the pregnancy and threatened to cut ties. The eldest granddaughter was 18.

Tian and Huang refused to terminate. On October 25, 2019, Tian delivered a girl weighing 2,560 grams by cesarean section. The hospital confirmed it was the first documented case in China of a woman of that age delivering through what was claimed to be natural conception.

"The child is heaven's gift to us," Huang told Upstream News. "She came, so we kept her."

The claim drew immediate medical skepticism. The average age of menopause for Chinese women is 49.5, and ovarian function typically ceases well before 60. Gong Xiaoming, a prominent obstetrician, wrote on the medical platform Jiankang Jie in 2020 that natural conception at 67 was "absolutely impossible" based on his two decades of clinical experience. No independent verification has been published.

A content management company approached the couple. Social media accounts were opened under Tianci's name. The family began posting short videos of the child's daily life and eventually moved into livestream e-commerce, selling regional specialty products from Zaozhuang.

Huang, a practicing lawyer, had initially projected confidence. He told reporters the couple's combined pensions exceeded 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) a month and vowed to take Tianci on a round-the-world trip by her third birthday. Neither materialized.

A woman who appeared frequently in the videos as Tianci's "older sister" was later identified as a member of the content operations team, not a relative, the Sohu news portal reported.

A move south, and mounting strain

The family's trajectory took another turn in 2025. While still based in Zaozhuang, they made the decision to relocate more than 2,000 kilometers south to Nanning for Tianci's schooling.

The move upended the child's routine. Tianci was enrolled in a boarding kindergarden in Guangxi and saw her parents only on weekends. In a video posted in February 2026, viewers noted the girl appeared withdrawn and anxious on camera, a contrast with her earlier playfulness. NetEase News reported in March 2026 that after being placed in the boarding school, Tianci seemed "cautious, as if afraid her parents would send her back."

Huang pulled her out after noticing the change. But observers said the effects lingered.

Tian's health, meanwhile, had been deteriorating. She had previously suffered a car accident that left her wheelchair-bound for months, followed by a lengthy rehabilitation. She underwent cosmetic procedures after recovery — double-eyelid surgery, microbladed eyebrows, skin tightening — which she said were meant to help her look presentable alongside her young daughter. The procedures drew criticism online, with commenters questioning her priorities.

By Mother's Day 2026, the toll was visible. Huang had acknowledged in earlier videos that the burden was heavy — juggling childcare, his wife's chronic health issues, legal work, and livestream sales, often for more than 10 hours a day. He said he had been unable to find a suitable live-in caretaker.

‘She should be grateful’

Asked whether she worried about Tianci's future, Tian offered a defiant response in a 2025 video: "She should be grateful to us. We brought her into this world."

Huang has struck a different tone, saying he wants to work until 90 to build Tianci a financial cushion. The couple has purchased insurance policies for their daughter and set aside savings. At 74, he announced what he called a "senior entrepreneurship" venture focused on livestream sales of Zaozhuang products.

But the Mother's Day scene laid bare the fragility of the arrangement.
