Emperor Entertainment Hotel has sold the the gold bricks that paved the lobby of its Grand Emperor Hotel in Macau for nearly HK$100 million (US$12.8 million), capitalizing on record-high gold prices to liquidate the property's signature "Golden Avenue."

The sale of the bullion, which weighs a combined 79 kilograms, is expected to generate a profit of approximately HK$90.2 million (US$11.5 million), the company said in a stock exchange filing. The move comes as gold prices have surged more than 60 percent over the past year, with the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) spot price repeatedly testing record levels and peaking above US$5,500 per ounce.

The "Golden Avenue," composed of 78 Swiss 999.9 fine gold bricks embedded in the floor, had been a distinctive feature of the hotel for over two decades. Designed to create a "luxurious and magnificent atmosphere," the installation attracted high foot traffic and became a popular attraction for tourists.

However, following the cessation of gaming operations at the property on October 30, 2025, the hotel is undergoing renovation.

"Given that the relevant area is planned to undergo renovation and redevelopment, the Precious Metal that were originally part of the hotel's interior design and outfits are no longer relevant to the theme of the hotel in the future." the company said.

The gold was extracted on the evening of January 29. The disposal allows the group to unlock the value of the asset while saving on the significant security and insurance costs required to maintain it.

Emperor Entertainment said the net proceeds will strengthen its financial position and fund future investments in entertainment and leisure facilities as it diversifies its revenue base.
