Young Filmmakers Take Center Stage at SIFF Mobile Filmmaking Camp

This year's Shanghai International Film Festival introduced a new initiative, the SIFF ING Mobile Filmmaking Camp, aimed at encouraging young creators to tell stories through mobile devices and explore more flexible forms of visual expression.

The project's award ceremony was held on June 17, showcasing films by mentors and emerging filmmakers while highlighting new possibilities for mobile cinema.

The event featured short films by Hong Kong director and screenwriter Nick Cheuk, actor Qu Chuxiao, and cinematographer Gao Weizhe. Works by 10 selected young creators were also screened.

Cheuk's mentor film, "And You, What Do You See?," was among the featured works.

Speaking at the event, he noted that filmmakers have always been drawn to lightweight and accessible equipment.

"For people who love filming, from film school to professional work, they always try every possible way to use the lightest equipment to shoot as much as possible," Cheuk said.

Gao presented his mentor short film Boxed Mom, which reflects on the unique value of mobile imagery in the digital era.

"In an era when AI can generate any image, mobile photography has instead become an anchor of reality," Gao said.

The camp forms part of SIFF's broader efforts to support emerging talent and explore how new technologies are reshaping cinematic storytelling.
