My Hands Tremble, But My Heart Is Steady: A Makeup Vlogger with Cerebral Palsy Inspires Millions
Lin Ling's makeup video on Douyin
Facing the camera with her hand trembling with each stroke, a young woman applies eyeliner with meticulous care.
Enter Lin Ling, a 25-year-old woman from Bijie in southwest China's Guizhou Province, who has transformed her passion for makeup into a platform for inspiration and economic independence – while living with cerebral palsy.
Diagnosed in early childhood, Lin's condition affected her mobility and speech. Her formal schooling lasted only three days at a kindergarten. "I couldn't walk steadily or speak clearly, let alone run and jump like other kids," Lin told Guizhou Daily.
With her parents working away from home, she spent years with her grandparents, until a simple act changed her world: At 13, she picked up her grandfather's mobile phone. "Through the lens, I saw a different world," she said.
That sparked a journey of self-education. Lin taught herself to read, edit videos and eventually master makeup techniques, practicing with affordable cosmetics bought with saved pocket money.
In November 2022, she launched an account on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, openly sharing her life as a beauty blogger with cerebral palsy. Her videos are raw and authentic: She often tilts her head for a better view, hands shaking as she applies mascara, sometimes poking her eyelids in the process.
A single makeup look can take over three hours of determined effort. Yet, her skill and artistry shine through. To date, she has garnered 796,000 followers and over 20 million likes, with one video alone receiving 2.16 million likes.
Her comment sections are flooded with support. "You're so beautiful and skilled. I'm the one who's all thumbs!" one fan wrote.
Others find deeper meaning: "As someone with a disability, your story gives me courage to chase my dreams," shared another.
Beyond inspiration, Lin's work has brought financial independence. She films and edits all content herself, now earning approximately 20,000 yuan per month through partnerships to support herself and her family. According to Haibao News, over the past three years, her earnings have helped her family repay over 400,000 yuan in debt.
"Knowing people draw strength from me is, in itself, a great encouragement," Lin told Guizhou Daily. Her message remains one of steadfast hope: "No matter what difficulties life brings, if you have passion and persistence, you will eventually see your own light."
