The Maijishan Grottoes: Eternal Arts Across Centuries exhibition is now open at the Powerlong Museum and will remain on view until Oct 26.

Located in Maiji district, Tianshui city, Gansu province, the Maijishan Grottoes trace their origins to the Later Qin period (384-417). For more than 1,600 years and 12 dynasties, the grottoes have undergone continuous expansion and restoration. Today, the site encompasses 221 caves, 3,938 sculptures, and over 1,000 square meters of murals, earning it recognition as one of China's four major grotto complexes.

While the murals are relatively few, their historical value is profound. Some pieces fill crucial gaps in the story of Chinese art. The site is especially celebrated for its delicate clay sculptures, which have earned it the nickname "oriental sculpture gallery."

The exhibition is organized into four sections, showcasing 137 masterpieces from the Maijishan Grottoes. Among them are 62 valuable cultural relics, including 12 nationally recognized first-class items. Visitors can admire clay Buddha statues, cave murals, stone sculpture steles, and more. Life-sized replicas of three classic caves allow guests to experience the beauty of the grottoes without leaving Shanghai. Complementing these historical treasures are 37 contemporary artworks by 33 modern artists, creating a dialogue between the past and present.
